ROADSHOW 2014

Here we are back in Carmarthen after a very successful roadshow. Thanks to everyone for their welcome and willingness to participate. The roadshow was different this year. We asked children from both primary and secondary schools to bring along their favourite book for us to record them reading. We hope that the children will record a book for us next year as part of a project in their school.

We started the roadshow in “Siop Cyfoes” Ammanford. Children from the Welsh school were first to be recorded. Dafydd Morgan, broadcaster with BBC Radio Cymru visited us and he included some of the recordings on the radio the following day. In the afternoon children came from “Ysgol Gyfun Dyffryn Aman” and they were given a talk by Alun Gibbard on how the process of writing a book takes place.

On Tuesday we travelled to “Ysgol Gymraeg Evan James” Pontypridd and “Ysgol Gymraeg y Castell” Caerffili came to “Siop Y Bont” Pontypridd. The children were in their element reading and it was very rewarding to hear children from English speaking homes reading Welsh Books very confidently.

On Wednesday we travelled to Bron Deifi Vestry, Lampeter thanks to Bet and Goronwy Evans. Children from “Ysgol Bro Pedr” came to see and read to us. In the afternoon the older children were entertained by Elinor Wyn Reynolds from Gomer Press. She explained to the children how the process of having a book published is done. A very inspirational talk.

The same can be said for our two sessions at the Bala in the company of the very popular author Bethan Gwanas. The children from four primary schools in the area listened attentively and then children from Ysgol y Berwyn came in the afternoon. Everyone enjoyed listening to her and had so much fun and a very educational afternoon.

The last day was exactly the same at Ysgol Maes Garmon in the morning and Ysgol Glanrafon in the afternoon. Over 70 children were recorded during the week. Pamphlets were distributed to them to give to relatives and friends to make them aware of this valuable service. They were also distributed to opticians and doctor’s surgeries in the area. We hope that we have made more people aware of this service. There are at least 145 children in Carmarthenshire alone with sight problems and could indeed receive books on cd’s.

Our aim is to get to know these people, young and old and to be able to provide them with this service.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all and thanks to Linda and Phil and everyone involved with Talking Books Wales for their devotion in 2014. The person that started all this, Miss Rhian Evans is spending Christmas in Australia after celebrating a very special birthday. One condition in the invitation to the party was that there were to be no presents but donations to Talking Books Wales or Carmarthen & District Talking Newspaper. It is only right for you to know that over £4000 was received. A fantastic amount of money. Thanks to everyone for your generous contributions.
