THE CHAIRMANS BLOG MAY 2016

Apologies for not writing sooner but you will realise, come the the Autumn, why we have been too busy to write anything. We are hoping that many of you will support a three day initiative to raise money for Talking Books Wales. More to follow as they say.

We would like to congratulate Steven Thomas and his team from The North Wales  Blind Society for staging a very worthwhile exhibition at Portmeirion . It was a great success as there were so many companies and charities present – all providing different services for the blind and partially sighted. We were fortunate to have been given a chance to promote our service – and in the process gain at least 12 new “customers.”

You may have read about the story writing competition-staged by Urdd Gobaith Cymru and ourselves for children between 6 and 11 years of age.   Tthere was a great response – 48 stories in all.The winner was Madog Hammond of Ysgol Treganna , Cardiff .   As it so happens the second prize was won by Cristyn Rhydderch Davies, another pupil at Treganna.    The joint third prize winners came from Ceredigion -  Megan Biddulph from Llanddewi Brefi and Dylan James Williams of Ysgol Gymraeg, Aberystwyth.   The winning story will be published in the Urdd magazine,  CIP, and we have already recorded the four stories  as a compilation CD.

Carmarthenshire County Council Chairman for 2015-16 was Councillor Peter Hughes Griffiths. Peter and his wife Meinir arranged a number of events during the year and we will be forever grateful to them for choosing Talking Books Wales as one of their favoured charities during their year of office as they have raised many thousands of pounds.

Two dates for the diary . On  28 June we will be visiting Tenby as the local  male choir will be staging a concert to raise money for us, and the Guide Dogs for the Blind. If you would like to join us, please get in touch.

Charlie Lovell Jones from Cardiff is a very talented young violinist and he, and other members of the family have agreed to perform at Pontyberem Hall on 3 September to help Talking Books Wales.   Various local companies have been very generous with their sponsorship of this exciting event.  Tickets will be available shortly, so don’t miss out on a unique opportunity to marvel at a young man who will be a big star one day.
