CHAIRMAN’S BLOG AUGUST 2013

It has not been a cruel summer for us at Talking Books Wales. One of our most prolific readers, Arwyn Davies died suddenly a few hours after signing off his monthly contribution to our sister organisation, the Carmarthen Talking Newspaper. He was one of our hardest workers. His years of experience as a community council clerk, meant that he was the ideal man to communicate with the hundreds of community and town councils in Wales during our Appeal, and he also masterminded the mail drop to hundreds of chapels and churches. He was in charge of the pink elephant collection boxes in pubs and business premises in the area. He believed passionately in what we were trying to achieve and we have lost a true friend indeed. It may take two, even three, people to take his place and if you are interested in helping us, please get in touch as soon as possible.

Arwyn would be the first to insist that “the show must go on” and go is the operative verb here as we are about to begin our journey through Wales in search of new “customers”. Five bookshops are opening their doors to us – in Llandudno, Caernarfon, Aberystwyth,, Crymych and Swansea. The idea is to meet local social workers, opticians, librarians, doctors,as well as blind and visually impaired people who could benefit from our service. The five shops are Siop Lyfrau Lewis, Llandudno, Palas Print, Caernarfon, Siop Inc, Aberystwyth, Siop Sian, Crymych and Siop Tŷ Tawe, Swansea. You are warmly invited to join us at any one of those venues.

In Aberystwyth, we will be announcing an exciting venture between us and Merched y Wawr with a view of increasing our number of listeners.

In each of the venues, local authors, whose work has already been recorded by us on CD or cassette, will be interviewed by sixth formers from schools in the locality.

A busy week ahead, then, after a tragic loss for us and many other organisations in the Carmarthen
